I thought I was just doing my neighbor a favor by interrupting her dinner, but when I looked through the window, everything changed.
What I saw that night wasn’t just a domestic dispute; it was a betrayal that would shatter everything she thought she knew.
Has time ever flown by without you even noticing? That’s how the last five years of my life have gone since I moved to this quiet neighborhood.
After my painful divorce, I needed a place where I could be myself, a place where I could find peace, alone with myself.
I didn’t expect to make close friends, but then Hazel and her husband, Sebastian, moved into the neighborhood, and everything changed. We became friends almost immediately.
She was one of those rare people who make you feel like they truly understand you. You could tell her anything.
Our friendship grew quickly, from casual conversations by the fence to morning coffee meetings in our kitchens.
Sebastian was always in the background, the kind of man who never caused a scene. Her marriage seemed perfect, at least on the surface.
But lately, Hazel wasn’t herself.
She was more nervous, and every now and then she’d drop hints about how things were getting «weird» at home, especially regarding her mother-in-law, Donna.
Hazel told me that Donna was causing drama behind her back, spreading lies about her, and making her life more difficult. At first, I thought she was exaggerating.
I’d met Donna a few times, and she seemed like your typical overbearing mother-in-law, but nothing more.
Then, yesterday, Hazel called me with a strange request. She asked me to interrupt her family dinner.
«At seven o’clock,» she said. No further details, just an urgency in her voice that made me agree without question.
I thought maybe she was trying to avoid an awkward moment. But what happened next… Well, let’s just say I wasn’t prepared for it.
At seven o’clock, I was standing outside Hazel’s door. I knocked twice, and before I could answer, Sebastian opened the door with his usual grin.
«Eddison! What a surprise. Come in,» he said, stepping aside to let me in.
But before I could reply, Hazel came running out of the house, almost pushing me out, and took my hand without a word.
I was so confused as she pulled me back into the garden and toward my house.
«What’s wrong, Hazel?» I whispered, my heart pounding as she led me toward my own home. «Why did you drag me out of there? You have to explain what’s going on.»
«Just come with me,» Hazel said, her voice low and trembling. «You’ll see everything in a minute. I promise. We have an amazing view from your upstairs window.»
I followed her, still confused but too curious to refuse. She led me upstairs, opening the door to the guest room.
We sat by the window, which overlooked the dining room.
The view was perfect, just like she said. We could see right into the kitchen, where Sebastian and Donna were preparing dinner.
«What are we doing here, Hazel?» I whispered, breathing heavily. I felt a growing unease, though I didn’t quite understand why.
Hazel didn’t answer. Instead, she pointed toward the parking lot.
And that’s when I saw Donna, bent over the food, constantly glancing around as if to make sure no one was watching her.

I leaned forward and squinted. Was she putting something in the food?
«Did she poison it?» I asked, my whisper filled with astonishment.
Hazel shook her head. «Not poison, but close. She’s been sabotaging me for months, Eddison.
She puts in too much salt, burns the food on purpose, and then sits back and waits for everyone to complain about how badly I cook.»
I was speechless. «Did she do it on purpose? Why?»
«I don’t know,» Hazel admitted, her voice laced with disappointment. «She wants me to look incompetent in front of Sebastian. Every time something goes wrong, she seems to relish everyone criticizing my cooking.»
I was about to say something when, suddenly, I noticed a movement out of the corner of my eye that made my stomach clench. I froze, my eyes widening.
«Hazel,» I whispered urgently. «Forget Donna for a moment. Look over there…»
My heart stopped as I looked out the window, and I could hardly believe what I was seeing.
There were Sebastian and Zoey, just inches apart. Sebastian’s hand was on top of Zoey’s, and he held it for too long. And then, it happened.
They kissed. Not a quick, accidental kiss, but a long, slow, deliberate one.
My stomach clenched. This wasn’t a misunderstanding. This was a raw, real betrayal.
Hazel, next to me, stood completely still, her face paling as she realized what was happening right in front of her. Her body trembled as if she could barely control herself.
«No… not my sister,» she whispered, her voice trembling, almost inaudible.
I took her hand, but she pulled it away and continued staring at the scene below. The rage emanating from her was palpable. I didn’t dare say anything.
«What you’re seeing, ends today,» she said, her voice trembling, but her words held unwavering determination.
Her gaze met mine, and the initial shock was replaced by an iron will. «I won’t let this go unpunished. No way.»
She pulled out her phone and began snapping photos, her voice shaky but resolute: Donna loitering in the kitchen, and her husband comfortably seated next to Zoey.
«Are you sure, Hazel?» I asked, even though I knew it was a pointless question. She’d already made up her mind.
«Absolutely,» she replied firmly. «I’ve put up with this for too long. Do you think I don’t notice what’s going on around me? Today you’ll find out.»
Without wasting a second, she called someone and handed me the phone. «Stay online. You’re going to record everything.»
Before I could reply, Hazel hurried downstairs. I watched her go, my pulse racing, the phone pressed to my ear.
Each step Hazel took was careful, a clear sound in the quiet house.
Sebastian and Zoey froze as she entered the room.
Sebastian jumped up from beside Zoey, as if caught in the act, his face paling.
«Hazel?» he stammered. «What are you doing here?»
Hazel’s voice was icy, each word laced with barely contained anger. «What am I doing here? No, Sebastian. You’d be better off asking, what are you doing here?»
Zoey’s eyes widened, and panic flashed across her face. She opened her mouth, ready to defend herself, but Hazel cut her off.
«Zoey, don’t try to explain,» Hazel snapped, her voice trembling with rage and disappointment. «You know perfectly well what I saw.»
«It’s not what you think,» Zoey mumbled, taking a step back.
