When objects started disappearing from my sick mother’s house, I installed hidden cameras — what they revealed shocked me.

ENTRETENIMIENTO

Caring for my mother was always a constant battle, and as if that weren’t enough, the tensions with my younger sister, Jane, never subsided.

But everything came to a head the day valuable items started disappearing from the house. At first, I was convinced I knew who was responsible, but what I discovered took my breath away, shattering everything I thought I knew.

The smell of cleaning products hung in the air as I wiped down the kitchen table, exhausted after a long day at work.

As I rummaged through my mother’s rooms, my anger toward Jane grew. It felt as if she had completely forgotten that this was also her mother.

For Jane, all of this was nothing new. From a young age, she had been unpredictable: disappearing for hours, taking money from Mom without anyone noticing, and skipping school.

No matter how many rules she broke, she always seemed to get away with it. Jane was brilliant, the perfect daughter. And that made her mistakes seem forgivable. She graduated with honors, earned a scholarship, and quickly became the role model of success everyone admired.

These days, I only saw her when I needed something, or to make sure I wouldn’t be left with nothing when it came to the inheritance. The burden of caring for my mother and coping with her illness was one I carried alone.

Nancy, the caregiver I had hired, helped, but it was expensive to have her around the clock. So I continued to handle everything myself after work.

«Jane, can you give me a hand?» I would ask her again and again, but she would just look at me dismissively and reply, «I have too much to do.»

I knew Jane hadn’t had a job in months. I, on the other hand, had a stable job, a husband, and a child who depended on me.

«Violet!» my mother called from her room. Her voice was filled with anguish, almost desperate. «Violet, come here!»

«Coming, Mom,» I replied quickly, wiping my hands and running to her room. When I opened the door, I found her by her dresser, holding a jewelry box.

«My gold earrings… they’re gone,» she murmured, her voice trembling.

«Are you sure you didn’t leave them somewhere else?» I asked cautiously, approaching her.

«No, I haven’t opened that box in weeks,» she replied. «I wanted to give you something nice, but when I opened it… they were gone.»

«Did anyone come by today while you were gone?» I asked.

«Nancy had the day off,» my mother said. «Only Jane came by this morning.»

«I’m going to talk to Jane,» I said, the lump in my throat growing heavier.

«Violet, please, no,» my mother pleaded. «Jane wouldn’t do something like that. I don’t want you two to fight again.»

«I need to know the truth,» I replied firmly.

After calming my mother down, I headed to Jane’s house. Rage was bubbling inside me; I couldn’t contain it anymore. When she opened the door, I went in without hesitation.

Days later, my mother called me again. Her face was even paler than before. «My gold rings… they’re gone too,» she whispered, barely audible.

Panic gripped me completely. It was time to check the security cameras. No one knew about them, not even my mother, so the thief thought he’d never be found out.

I sat down at the computer and started reviewing the recordings. Every second that passed made my heart race. Finally, I saw Jane on the screen.

She approached my mother’s jewelry box. My pulse jumped when I saw her open it, but she quickly closed it without taking anything.

I felt a mixture of relief and confusion. But when the next video started, everything collapsed. Kaden appeared. My eyes widened, and my breath caught in my throat.

I saw him approach the box, take one of the gold rings, and put it in his pocket before leaving the room.

I couldn’t believe it. Kaden? My husband? The thief? For weeks I had blamed Jane, and now I was facing the harsh reality: I had been wrong. The thief was Kaden.

With trembling hands, I grabbed the USB drive and went back home. Kaden was getting up to leave, and I stood in front of him, blocking the door.

«I know everything,» I said, my voice firm even though fear gripped me.

«What are you saying?» he asked, clearly confused.

«I know you stole from my mother,» I replied, showing him the USB drive.

His face fell. «Did Jane tell you?» he asked, visibly nervous.

«No! Why would she tell me?» I replied, a mixture of surprise and fury on my face.

Kaden looked down and sighed. «I borrowed money from her. When she found out why, she turned me down. She even offered to help pay for rehab, but I refused. Then she was shocked when she saw me take the jewelry.»

I was completely paralyzed. «You made me believe Jane was the culprit? And now you come up with this explanation?»

«I didn’t mean to hurt anyone,» Kaden said quietly.

«But you did! You let me accuse my sister while you hid!» I yelled, my anger overflowing.

«I’m so sorry, Violet,» Kaden whispered, his face flushed with shame.

«I want you to leave,» I said firmly. «Pack your bags and leave the house when I go to work. I’ll let you know when I’m ready to talk.»

«Do you want a divorce?» he asked, almost breathless.

«I don’t know,» I replied, fighting back tears. «But right now I can’t even look at you.»

«I’m sorry,» he said before leaving, his head bowed.

When the door closed behind him, I collapsed, sobbing. I went straight to Jane’s house to apologize. She opened the door when she saw my tears.

«I’m so sorry,» I said, my voice trembling.

Jane hugged me without saying a word.

«Thank you,» I whispered, clinging to her. «Thank you for the truth.»

«I didn’t do it for him,» she said calmly. «I did it for you.»

«Can you forgive me?» I asked, my voice breaking.

«It’s okay, Violet,» she replied gently. «I’ll always be here for you.»
