Judy Obregon, founder of a dog rescue group called The Abandoned Ones, received a call about a poodle mix she had been trying to rescue.
But once she saw the photo of the dog lying there, she knew it was too late. «It’s gone now,» she wrote. «I love my dogs so much.»
Obregon had received a call earlier about local children bullying the dog.
“Kids were throwing food in the street, so the dog was running around,” Obregón told The Dodo. “Then, neighbors saw kids tying a water hose around its neck.”
Obregón diligently returned to the neighborhood three times, trying to catch the dog, but to no avail.
Then, the woman who had contacted her about the dog in the first place sent her this heartbreaking photo, and it broke her heart. If only she could have caught it sooner.
“I felt like I wasn’t there in time to get to that dog before it got into that situation.”
Even so, the dog didn’t deserve to lie there like that, so Obregón went to him immediately. When she got there, the most incredible and unexpected thing happened.
“When I got to him, he was still in the same spot, but he had his head held high,” Obregón said. “He was probably the happiest person in the world.”
Obregón picked up the dog and named him Gully. She was certain that if she hadn’t arrived when she did, he truly wouldn’t have made it.
Gully was suffering from malnutrition and dehydration. He was so weak he couldn’t walk. He was also, understandably, traumatized.
But once Gully got into Obregón’s car, he finally relaxed. He understood he had been rescued.
«He started giving me kisses,» Obregón said.
After a few days at the vet, Gully made a full recovery. Obregón’s friend, Crystal, took him in as a foster family while they searched for a forever home for the deserving pup.
What amazed everyone who met Gully was how quickly he put his days on the streets behind him and immediately began to trust humans.
Then Obregón received the good news: Gully had found his forever home!
Now he has a perfect life and will never have to worry about being hungry or cold again. No one will ever mistreat him. The «dead» dog was alive and well—and doing great!
Obregón will be eternally grateful to the woman who called him and sent him this heartbreaking photo of Gully.
«That’s why I do what I do,» Obregón said. «And I must say that without this neighbor, whom I’ll never meet, Gully wouldn’t be alive. He practically saved his life.»
