«I married my father’s friend – and I was surprised by what happened on our wedding night.»

ENTRETENIMIENTO

Amber had long since given up on the idea of finding love. However, when she met Steve, an old friend of her father’s, at a barbecue, everything changed.

Their passionate romance quickly blossomed into marriage, and for a brief moment, it seemed all her dreams were coming true.

But on her wedding night, Amber discovered a secret about Steve that called into question everything she thought she knew about their relationship.

After everything she had been through, she no longer expected to find true love.

She got in her car to go to her parents’ house, but upon arriving, she stopped in surprise at the sight of several cars parked haphazardly on the lawn.

«What’s going on here?» she muttered to herself, bracing herself for some family surprise at home.

She grabbed her purse, locked the car, and walked to the door, hoping it wasn’t anything too exciting.

As soon as she opened the door, the familiar aroma of barbecue greeted her, followed by her father’s laughter.

She glanced into the living room and then out the window at the garden.

Of course. Dad had organized one of his usual impromptu barbecues. The garden was packed, mostly with people from his auto shop.

«Amber!» Her father’s shout pulled her from her thoughts. He was standing by the grill, as usual, wearing his apron. «Come inside, grab a drink, and join us. The guys from the shop are here.»

Amber tried to stifle a sigh. «It feels like half the town is here,» she muttered as she kicked off her shoes.

Before she could blend into the din, the doorbell rang. Her father put down his tongs and wiped his hands on his apron.

«That must be Steve,» he said almost to himself, reaching for the doorknob. «You haven’t met him yet, have you?»

Before she could answer, the door opened.

«Steve!» her father exclaimed, slapping her on the back. «Come in, just in time. And this is my daughter, Amber.»

Amber looked up, and her heart stopped for a moment.

Steve was tall, handsome in a rugged way, with graying hair and eyes that were both warm and intense. When he smiled at her, she felt a strange sensation in her chest, something she hadn’t expected.

«Nice to meet you, Amber,» he said, extending his hand.

His calm, confident voice made Amber feel uneasy, especially since, after the long trip, she probably looked a little disheveled.

«Nice to meet you too,» she replied.

From that moment on, she couldn’t stop looking at him. Steve had a quiet way of calming everyone around him, and he listened more than he spoke.

Amber tried to focus on the conversations around her, but every time their eyes met, she felt an inexplicable attraction.

It was absurd. She had already given up any hope of finding «true love» and had focused on her work and her family.

But something about Steve made her reconsider her beliefs, even though she didn’t want to admit it.

As the night began to wind down, she said her goodbyes and headed toward her car. Of course, the car wouldn’t start.

«Great,» she muttered, as she got behind the wheel. She was thinking about asking her father for help again, but before she could, someone tapped on the window.

It was Steve.

«Car trouble?» he asked with a smile, as if he were used to fixing vehicles.

«Yeah, it won’t start. I was going to ask Dad for help, but…»

«Don’t worry,» he said. «Let me take a look.»

Before she could react, Steve rolled up his sleeves and ducked under the hood. His hands moved with dexterity, and in a few minutes, the car started without a hitch.

Amber didn’t even realize she’d been holding her breath until she could finally let out a sigh of relief.

«Good as new,» he said, wiping his hands with a cloth.

«Thanks, Steve,» she said gratefully. «I owe you one.»

He shrugged, giving her a look that sent a shiver down her spine. «How about dinner? That way we’ll be even.»

Amber froze for a moment. Was he really asking her out?

A voice in her head warned her not to accept, but something in his eyes made her take the risk.

«Yeah, dinner sounds good.»

And so, without thinking too much about it, she accepted.

She never imagined that Steve would be the one to heal her heart, or break it.

Six months later, she stood in front of the mirror in her old room, looking at her reflection in the wedding dress.

It felt surreal.

After everything she’d been through, she never thought this day would come.

I was 39 years old and had given up on dreaming of a fairytale wedding.

But there I was, about to marry Steve.

Our wedding was small: just close family and a few friends, just as we wanted.

I remember standing at the altar, looking at Steve, and feeling a peace I hadn’t felt in years.

For the first time in a long time, I had no doubts.

«Yes,» I whispered, fighting back tears.

«Yes,» Steve repeated, his voice

«But sometimes I talk to her. I know it sounds strange, but I feel like she’s still with me. Especially today. I wanted her to see this. I wanted her to know how happy I am.»

I didn’t know what to say.

His pain was palpable, wet, and it felt like it now belonged to both of us.

But I didn’t feel fear.

I didn’t feel anger.

I only felt… sadness.

Sadness for him, for everything he had lost, and for the burden he carried alone.

His suffering pierced me to my very soul, as if it were my own.

I sat beside him and took his hand in mine.

«I understand,» I said gently.

«You’re not crazy, Steve. You’re suffering.»

He sighed, his breath ragged, and looked at me with such vulnerability that my heart almost broke.

«I’m sorry. I should have told you sooner. I didn’t mean to scare you.»

«You don’t scare me,» I reassured him, squeezing his hand.

«We all carry things that haunt us.

But now we’re together.

We can carry this weight together.»

Steve’s eyes filled with tears, and I held him tight, as the weight of it all—his pain, his love, his fears—floated between us.

«Maybe we should talk to someone. A therapist. It doesn’t have to be just you and Stacey.»

He nodded against my shoulder, and his embrace tightened.

«I’ve been thinking about it. I just didn’t know how to start. Thank you for understanding, Amber. I didn’t know how much I needed this.»

I pulled back slightly, looking into his eyes, and my heart swelled with a love deeper than I’d ever imagined.

«We’ll make it, Steve. Together.»

And when I kissed him, I knew we would.

We weren’t perfect, but we were real, and for once, that was enough.

Isn’t that the true essence of love?

It’s not about finding someone perfect, without scars; it’s about finding someone you’re willing to share your scars with.
